Sitting Properly to Avoid Pressure Sores

Make sure that you are sitting on the best cushion possible based on your specific needs. The occupational therapist or doctor can prescribe this for you. If you are not sitting on the right cushion you can get pressure sores very easily. Pressure sores are bad and may require you to do bed rest in order for them to heal properly if they do heal.

If you have a disability that affects your ability to feel your behind, you are probably at an increased risk for pressure sores. Make sure to examine your behind at least twice a day. If you can not do this yourself, get your helper properly trained in what to look for and have them do it. Even if you can do it yourself, you should ask for guidance from your medical provider in what to look for in your special condition.

Several manufactures make wheelchair cushions. Over the years I have personally tried several of them and for me I like the Roho cushion the best. It is a cushion that is filled with air. The cushion has several projections that allow the air to move around with the smallest movements. Often, I forget or am too weak to do lifts which help with pressure sore prevention. So the Roho cushion moves and the pressure is adjusted when I adjust my wheelchair without me even thinking about it.

If you have ever had a pressure sore, you know what a pain it is. Make sure to use preventative techniques to avoid these unfortunate complications from being a wheelchair user. Make sure to always talk to your medical professional about any problems and special needs that you may have while sitting in your wheelchair.

Do you have any suggestions for the readers? If so please add to the comments and let us know. Maybe you have a brand of cushion that you like.

Alice - Free Shipping & $10 off $50 for new customers

Using a wheelchair can give us greater challenges then the average person. It is difficult or impossible to go to the store sometimes. If the customer service is poor then the inaccessible store is useless. I have found this great shopping option that raises my level of independence. Instead of relying on people to help me, I can order items and have them arrive on my doorstep. No help needed.

What a great service. If you have not tried Alice yet, you need to. They offer free shipping on every order, $10 off your first accumulation of $50, and on top of that they have great coupons that are taken off instantly. My first order with them was for about $25 after all my discounts and deals, and I got tons of stuff.

This is a great company to because they have those basic items that everyone needs. I order baby food from them that is far cheaper from them then the local companies. My little girl loves the Gerber pasta and cheese pick-ups and they sell them for $1.10 regular price. At the local Vons, they are $1.69. So I not only save lots of money but it is convenient as well. With the free shipping I can order what I need when I need it. They also remind me when I might be running low on an item.

When you click on their link you will get the $10 off $50 or more sign up bonus. I used this on my first order, but I believe they will combine your orders if you do not order $50 on the first time.

My strategy to with them is see what is on sale with their coupons, you can save tons by doing this. If you need other tips post and I will try to give some more money saving strategies for Alice.

Don't Forget Free Resources

Many non profit organizations have tons of donated chairs and medical equpiment. Even if you are not associated with a specific group, most have a cross help policy when it comes to the equipment.

First check with your specific disease or difficulties cause. They can then help you to find other resources if they can not assist you. Some will even have a special fund to help pay for items not otherwise available to their clientel. A lot of times this fund is a multi-use account. Once a year is usually the time frame for most charities. So that you may utilize this fund once every fiscal year.

Plan ahead if possible with this in mind and you can benefit everyone. Instead of trying to get everything you need at once, maybe break it up into little chunks so that the non-profit or organization can help you more. Remember to that their is no rule normally about asking multiple agencies if appropriate for assistance. An example would be that you have Arthritis, you could ask the Arthritis foundation for assistance, the drug company that sells your arthritis medications, the church that you attend, and any other relevant agencies that would be interested in helping you. The more donors you can find the smaller the hit to all of their budgets.

Make sure to always donate your old equipment as well to these programs. Even though you may not be able to use something, others may. Perhaps your condition has declined and now you use an electric wheelchair, well your old manual wheelchair may fit the needs of another consumer. Lots of these non-profits will also give you a receipt so that you can take a tax write off if you do donate to an appropriate agency. So in essence it is like double dipping, you are helping them and they are helping you with a tax write off and new equipement.

Remember too, if you do get something second hand make sure that you have a professional assess you and your needs. The fit of the equipment can sometimes be even more important then the equipment itself.

Happy donations!

Wheelchairs Can Make a Difference in Pain Levels

Based on my own ancedotal experience I can let you know that if you do not use the proper wheelchair you may be experencing more pain then need be. Improperly fitting wheelchairs can be dangerous and can even cause life threatening problems like pressure sores. That is a big reason why they are a prescribed item. They need to be fitted just like a glove.

When buying a wheelchair or electric wheelchair you should be measured by a medical professional. they should take several tape measurements and this alone can take over an hour if they are doing it properly. These measurements can then be used to make sure that the wheelchair you get is the proper one for you. Not all wheelchairs come in all sizes, so this may limit you.

Children also need to be refitted very often. If not done so the child is at risk for various accidents, pressure sores, and even falling over in the chair. Do not just put your child in a small adults wheelchair this is not very safe or productive for the child.

You may have to travel to a larger area to get a proper fitting chair. Not always in small rural areas do they exist, it is well worth the trip to do this. As you may know wheelchairs are like an investment they are very costly, some even cost more then a car.
